Pallas's Long-tongued Bat
(Glossophaga soricina handleyi)
Glossophaga soricina is a widespread Neotropical species, and the subspecies resident in the Yucatán is G. s. handleyi.
This species has the fastest metabolism ever recorded in a mammal. It is an opportunistic feeder that can visit hundreds of flowers in a single night. These two qualities have earned it the common name "hummingbird of the night." It frequently roosts in the numerous caves and culverts found throughout the peninsula's karstic landscape.
