The Cinnamon Hummingbird is one of the most common and easily recognizable birds in the Yucatán Peninsula due to its warm, earthy colors. Unlike many other hummingbirds that have dark or white bellies, this bird is almost entirely a rich, toasted-orange or "cinnamon" color from its throat all the way down to its tail. Its back and the top of its head are a contrasting metallic bronze-green that shimmers when the light hits it.

One of its most distinctive features is its long, slender bill, which is a bright coral-red or pinkish-orange with a sharp black tip. This bill is slightly curved, making it a perfect tool for reaching deep into the tubular flowers of the Siricote or the Firecracker Plant. Because it is a medium-sized, hardy hummingbird, it is often quite bold and territorial, frequently seen chasing other birds away from its favorite flowering trees in gardens and coastal scrublands.
